About

sneaking around the jade tree

Hi. I’m Janelle.

I love celebrating life and all of its intricacies; culture, community, nature and the human body fascinate me. I wish to share my fascination, curiosity, joy and love through everything that I do.

Labrador City, NL, is where I spent the first 18 years of my life pondering what I wanted to “be.” Dance, education, community and therapy were deep in my heart, but I didn’t know how to manifest a life of all four, and I wasn’t even sure that it was possible. After studying music, linguistics, English and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL, I headed to Edmonton.

Shortly after arriving, I realized that the only hurdle to manifesting my dreams – even my wildest ones – was ME. At that point, I dove into my new life’s work – massage therapy and dance. Yoga, Contact Improvisation, Ecstatic Dance and Nia are my most practiced movement forms.

In August 2007, I earned my white belt in Nia and became a certified Nia instructor; I have been teaching ever since. Currently, I am teaching the only class in Edmonton, at City Arts Centre.

In July 2009, I graduated with a certification in massage therapy from Makami College, and have been practicing ever since.

On an ecofarm southeast of Edmonton is where I live with my shiny daughter, Alleluia Joy, and my husband, Dylan Toymaker, the artist extraordinaire.

Janelle will be giving me some awesome text to place here, but for now you get to read this!
